Battling Your Inner Demons

No matter where you are in life, you will at one time or another have inner demons to battle. They may be from painful experiences or abuse, unkind words or self inflicted wounds. These demons tend to haunt us, wear us down. And like any bad horror movie they pop back into the story at the most inconvenient moments. Just when you think you are safe they come back bigger, stronger and immune to the remedies that worked in the past.

Like any hero, you can take your inner demons on one by one and battle them to the end.  You can be brave and gallant, courageous and feel fully capable; then the molten fire flows from the demon’s mouth and intensifies everything to take it to a completely different level. Suddenly you find yourself unprepared, unskilled, and burnt to a crisp. The demon has won this round and left you for dead.

You can see these walking wounded all around you. They look and act like normal people, but something is missing. Their passion and zest for life seems to be missing. They are glad to spend time with you, yet it is almost as if they are behind a veil. They seem unable to reach through whatever has wounded their soul. They seem to exist through each day not truly living the life they want. Almost as if they have something haunting their thoughts and preventing them from enjoying everything around them. All of us have felt this way at one time or another as we grow and mature. Some of us have chosen to fight our inner demons to the death while others have still one or two more battles to fight before our inner demons melt into dust. No matter where we are, we need cheering on to keep up the good fight.

When we cheer for the hero, it isn’t always because they won the battle. Sometimes they get squashed like a bug and simply get back up one more time. We cheer them because we can relate. We know what it feels like to lose the battle and we want to see someone get back up just like we do.We cheer them when they find allies and comrades to help them on their quest. We cheer them all along the march into battle with the hopes that this time reinforcements and a different plan will vanquish the beast. We cheer them to give them reinforcement for their courage and strength. And we cheer simply because we have beaten the beast and we know they can do it too.

Is today the day you fight your inner demons and win? Is today the day you finally reach out for help and let other victors join you in your quest for freedom? Or is today the day you slip back into your bed and pull the covers over your head, hoping for more courage tomorrow? None of us is guaranteed tomorrow, so today may be your only chance to slay your dragon. It may be your last chance to free yourself, your dreams and your future best self from the bonds of your past. The only way you will know is to get into the fight. Get on your horse, pull up your sword and shield and get going. Know that there are others fighting the same fight and winning. You too can battle your inner beast and be victorious. Let today be the day you try one more time, fight the good fight, and send your inner demon back to the fiery depths of darkness. Only you will know when you are free from the pain and anguish. Only you will know when the veil has been lifted and you are truly free to be the person you really want to be. The world is waiting for you to stand up and fight. Tally Ho!
