The Tides of Life

Life seems to ebb and flow, bringing us waves to ride and navigate. As the year winds down it can be especially hard to face the realities of someone’s life coming to an end. It feels like a surprise and a cruel joke. During the holidays when sickness or ill health arrive for a family, it very clearly puts everything into perspective. The waves of joy, holiday spirit, sadness and uncertainty rush through us. They take us on an emotional surf board ride, allowing us to give thanks and shed tears all within minutes of each other.

None of us are immune from pain and sorrow. During this time of fun and frivolity it can be hard to remember that not everyone is celebrating the same thing. Some families simply want their loved one to recognize them one more time before going to glory. Others want to be able to leave the hospital to be with family. Others simply want to give their loved one peace and a few last holiday experiences before they rest well for another evening. Getting old is not for Sissies. And being there for those who are experiencing health challenges can add stress and emotions most people do not associate with the holidays. It serves to remind us that not everyone is healthy all the time and when we are, we need to be patient. We need to cut them some slack and slow down. We need to provide care for those who are sick and those who love them.

If you got out of bed today with all your faculties in tact, are able to walk on your own and prepare your own day…give thanks. If you love someone who is experiencing a health challenge or facing the end of their days, give them all the love you can and know that their life matters in how they have helped you become YOU. If you are facing the unknown with a family member’s health, take a deep breath and you will get through it all. They are the most important thing to focus on right now, so invest your time there and the holidays will be back next year.

Life comes in waves, like the tide. There is low tide and high tide. Simply ride the wave before you and know that soon it will change to the other.
