After the Thanksgiving leftovers, after the football game naps, after the house clean up there is time to create. My husband is carving a new linoleum block of a goldfish. He printed several and played with adding watercolor and colored pencil. As they dry overnight, he already has things he wants to develop even more.
What do you do when you have quiet time? Do you read a good book, write a story, draw or paint or just think? Life is made up of so many important things – family, work, church, community – and yet we get to be our true selves when we use our quiet time. During the minutes and hours when no one has a demand on our time, we get to do the things that help us stay grounded. It is the quiet time, the time to think and ponder and relax that allow us to settle into our own skins and feel at peace.
I have friends who do not like quiet. They are always doing and going and moving. They can’t sit still, won’t sit still and hate being home or alone. They are always moving and always doing something. When asked they say they will be quiet when they die; until then, they want to pack as much as they can into every hour of everyday. I understand this, and find myself struggling with always doing. I too pack a lot into each hour of every day; yet I have learned to savor the quiet times to center myself and find who I really want to be.
So again, what do you do when you have quiet time? I hope that today you have a chance to savor the silence and find your true self. Let the quiet invade your soul and bring it to life…let your thoughts flow and the ideas come alive.
