Every choice we make adds to who we are and who we will become. Decision after decision builds upon each other. With some decisions we wish we could go back and do it differently. We wish we could have foreseen the challenges our choices have caused, maybe we would have chosen to act or speak or think differently. But we can’t go back. We can’t change what has happened in the past. We have to live with the choices we made and where we landed as a result. This can be tough to face when we truly see the impact of our decisions.
I think everyone has something they did they wold rather not have done. Or something they did not do that they would have preferred they have completed. These are the insights life and distance provide. Too often I see people dwelling on the wrong decision instead of thinking about how to deal with the consequences. We beat ourselves up over something in the past and end up frustrated, sad and depressed. I get that. Like most people I have things I have done or said or didn’t do that haunt me. I think that is normal for the human condition. The REAL challenge comes with living with your choices.
If you don’t like the wall you are building then with your next decision start taking down that wall. If you have a relationship or situation where you struggle, then with your next choice begin to travel the path to make things better. If you wish you had chosen A instead of B, then start moving back towards A and see if it still works in your current world. Life is full of second chances, third chances, fourth and fifth chances. Life is as forgiving as we allow it to be. First we have to forgive ourselves and find our way to the person and circumstances we want to live within.
I had someone ask me what decision in my past would I change if I could. I thought for a moment and said none. The choices I made all throughout my life have led me to where I am and who I am today. Was everything perfect, uhhhhhh no. Did everything turn out the way I hoped, or planned or dreamed…..again no. If I changed something in my past I would not be where I am now, and I like who and where I am now. Are there things I want to change, absolutely. Are there things that need to improve, for sure! So THAT is where I will focus my choices and decisions, making my current life, my current today, my current world the best I can.
Embrace where you are today and change from this pint forward. You have the power to choose where and how you make your next move, so choose wisely.
