This young man went to serve his country in France in 1919, almost one hundred years ago. His job overseas was to serve as a guard for the French soldiers who were captured during the First World War. He fought to fulfill his hope in life – his hope that my father and his future grand children would never have to fight in an other future wars. He was the paternal grandfather I never met, William Benjamin Moore.
Generations upon generations have served and sacrificed so that the world would be a different place. They fought for freedom, justice and for people of all lands to be able to make choices about their own lives. Almost one hundred years later we are still fighting for these things; men and women and their families are still making sacrifices for our freedom. Today we honor these brave souls and give thanks for their courage and commitment on our behalf.
As you turn on your radio, channel surf, search the web, open any newspaper or magazine, or stand near the water cooler and freely spout your opinions and beliefs do not forget that someone paid the price for you to do all these things. Give thanks and be grateful for their service. And let’s hope it does not take another hundred years for us to all get along and share this globe in peace.
