Gabbi’s Big Sleep

It was the day any pet owner dreads. Gabbi was almost seventeen years old and her health was failing rapidly. She would not eat and had very little energy to do anything other than sleep.  I took her to the vet and he agreed that it was time. So we put her down for her big sleep. She was a good pet and companion, in spite of all of her quirks. She will be missed.

It was the kind and humane thing to do; still a horrible decision to have to make. She was not the first pet where we had to bring their life to an end, and it will not be our last. As a pet owner it is the inevitable. Life is not forever, which means at some point a tough call has to be implemented. In loving these little creatures while they are alive we have to also be willing to face the end of our time together. If we want the gift of friendship, companionship and life we must be willing to accept the challenges that come with death. What makes it easier are the wonderful days full or warm naps and playing in the fall leaves. Pets bring such joy to our lives that to choose not to have them because eventually they will die means we lose the gift of becoming the person our pets thinks we are.

Never allow fear or avoiding the eventual negative prevent you from savoring the benefits. Life is about learning from both the good and bad, the joyful and the sorrowful. Becoming a better version of ourselves means taking it all in and making the most of the lessons we are given. Life is about taking risks and handling all that comes our way through the happy and the sad. Choose your next adventure because it brings joy and don’t worry about the pain that may come as well; both will make you a better you, if you lt it.
