In all our lives we work hard to reach goals, complete tasks and measure up to what people expect. In our work he have targets and deadlines to meet. In our families we have legacies to live up to and family obligations to fulfill. In our own minds we also have a mariad of ideas and hopes rushing through our brains, things we want to excel at doing and mountains we want to climb. Sometimes all these things begin to conflict or cause confusion. Work wants one thing and family life requires another. Our own hopes begin to grow or dwindle as time goes by. It can become overwhelming how to measure up to every expectation including our own.
When you think about measuring up, what are you working so hard to measure up to? Have you really thought about how YOU measure success? Have you thought about what is important to you? Have you thought about what you are willing to defend, go without, or never forget in order to be a success?
We spend so much time living up to other people’s expectation that we forget to stop and think about what we really want. Yes, there are things we have to do in life. And yes, there are things we have committed to completing. Yes people have expectations and those may or may not change over time. Knowing that we only have so many days on this earth, ask yourself one simple question…is this how I want to spend my time before I use up my last day on earth? If you are not able to clearly answer in the positive, then it’s time to rethink why you are doing what you are doing. It may take time, and you may have to make small changes in order to get to waht oyu really want to do…in teh end it will be worth it.
If we are not doing what we think is important, then how can we ever measure up to what anyone else expects? Have the courage today to figure out how you measure success, then start working towards YOUR definition one day at a time.
