I was walking around a junkyard and saw this book on the ground blowing in the wind. It made me think about all the things the internet has replaced, including books. I mean books with pages, covers, and one where you need a bookmark to keep your place. This football statistics book has been replaced by Google. Now it lies dirty and done for on the driveway of the junkyard.
I enjoy books. I love the charm of turning an actual piece of paper with the thrilling exhilaration of not knowing what will happen next. I feel a sense of accomplishment as I see the bookmark move throughout the pages, reminding me that I have more adventures to discover, more knowledge to learn, more life to live. Each time I hear the spine crackle or feel the cover with my hand, I know that life as I knew it is about to get so much better. Reading an actual book brings life and enjoyment that no amount of time with your ipad or kindle can provide.
We have a library in our house where we have all the family books. Classics, chidren’s stories, motivational autobiographies, history, mysteries, travel journals, and so much more. There is no media in that room, and I love to go in there and read. Each time I snuggle onto the sofa with a book and a blanket I know life is good. Sometimes I fall asleep, sometimes I stay up into the wee hours of the night savoring the last pages of a mystery. However we use that room, you cannot escape our love of books.
I do admit I use an iPad when I travel, it weighs a lot less than all the books I would need to pack. When I can, I prefer a book. So thank you internet for storing all that you store, I refuse to lose the joy of actual books. I will use the internet when I need to, then grab a book to experience the real joy of learning and reading.
