I visited a mall recently because the last time I was there – six months ago – the food court was under construction. The construction was scheduled to be done in March…what you see here is a new area of the mall that is now under construction. It seems as if this particulate mall has been under construction for years. It is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. I was excited to arrive and see the final touches to only be greeted by more areas in process.
I thought about this…and how it applies to life in general. Sometimes it feels like as soon as you get one area of your world finished another area needs to be updated and changed. Walls need to be torn down, colors need to be updated, everything in the space needs to be rearranged. And once that room or area looks better, you see the flaws or potential in another area…and the cosntruction begins all over again. It can feel like a never ending cycle.
And when you think about life and the different stages we travel as we get older, there seems to always be something under construction. When I was in my twenties I thought nothing of staying up late playing cards with my friends. Now that I am much older it is hard to stay up past midnight let alone into the wee hours of the morning. Getting older and growing as a person is not for sissies…it takes guts to change and be under construction. It takes vision and energy to tear something out to put something new in its place. It also takes patience to live while under construction…no one likes cleaning up over and over and over again during renovation, yet it is a sad fact of the renovation process.
So what areas of your life are under construction? Or what areas of your life do you WANT to see under construction but do not have the time or money to make the change yet? Or maybe you lack the patience to finish so you are avoiding getting started? Reinventing yourself or your business or your product takes time, energy, and money…and you may not have enough of all three or even one of those. You may lack the knowledge or know how to even think about what changes are possible…here is when I refer you to a reliable source. Just like construction sites use a designer, you might need a designer or coach for the areas of your life you want to renovate. Seek feedback from someone you trust or who lives their life in a way that you want to learn how to live…sometimes you need the perspective of someone with experience in an effort area to understand what is possible. Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from reinventing…go talk to someone who has already done it. Get out your hard hat and let the new construction begin…eventually you will get through it all and LOVE the new you.
