These are the ever dreaded bathroom alternatives when you visit the hospital. It is the uncomfortable method used to gather that all important sample when your Doctor wants to find out what you have going on…you know what I mean. I saw these and had to snap a shot…they made me laugh and uncomfortable at the same time.
We recently spent many hours in an emergency room waiting area…talk about a place to experience humanity. Every size, shape, color, and langauge was there…waiting. To add to the fun, the hospital computer system went down, so everything had to be done by hand, manually, on paper. The line to even get checked in was out the front door. We may have already been sitting there for hours, but the line made me glad we arrived when we did.
Sitting there I also watched all the people and how they handled adversity, uncertainty, and not knowing what might happen next. Some just read their phones. Some watched bad tv. Some looked far way and just sat there absorbed in their own thoughts. Some talked to the people waiting with them, and others just moaned or tried to get comfortable as they waited to be called next. Knowing the one we loved was already in a room, getting tests, seeing a Doctor made me feel more compassion for those who were still waiting. How awful it can feel to know someone is out there who can help, you just have to wait your turn to experience their expertise.
I think how we react under pressure and in times of uncertainty says a lot about who we are and what we value. Think back about a time when you were under pressure – not job related – when you were helpless and had to wait. What did you do? What did you learn about yourself? Would you do it that same way again, or would you change things? Today as you encounter people, think about what they might be feeling and how the situation is making them react. You might only be seeing them when they are uncomfortable and experiencing dread…like these bathroom alternatives, no one is always at their best.
