Ya’ know those plates people buy when they visit a state, the ones with the state name on them? These are those plates. I saw this display in Westside Market (www.westsidemarketatl.com). It was hanging over a couch. I love plates, and hanging them is a great way to display a collection. Some people think these kinds of things are ‘Kitch’, I think it’s pretty cool.
What I most enjoyed about seeing all these plates was the thought that someone had collected all of them, hung them, and probably had a story for each one. So they were not only hanging plates, they were hanging memories. Too many times our memories sit in boxes and we never enjoy them. Photos, ticket stubs, ID cards, official documents never get to see the light of day…until we open the box and peer inside. What a shame. I think that most of the joy of collecting “things” is to enjoy those things. And how can we enjoy them if they sit in a box?
I challenge you to find a box of your “stuff” and get it out. Have fun touching anf feeling those memories. Relive the high and low points, then think of a way to display your memories so you and others can enjoy them. For the next few posts I will share some of the clever ways I have seen people display and enjoy their collections….so stay tuned!
