Inspiration 314: The Freedom that Down Sizing Brings

Get out your Pepto Bismal, this is a lunch my husband ordered in Des Moines, Iowa at Jethro’s BBQ n’ Bacon Bacon restaurant (jethrosdesmoines.com). I mean it, this is the lunch portion. And no, my hubby likes food but he was not able to finish this one on his own. He said it was delicious, the portion he was able to finish.

So let’s talk about excess. As Amercians, we live excess all the time. We work to get what we want, even when what we want is more than what we really need…this meal is a good example. We overindulge and over consume until we are big, fat, and lethargic about way too many things in our lives. Don’t believe me – take this small test. Open all the drawers in your bathroom or kitchen – you pick which room. Then count the items in the drawers. Now ask yourself, when was the last time you used ALL of the items in your drawers? If you can’t say…or justify it all by saying I might need it one day…then you may have a challenge with excess slathered like a side dish with a serving of clutter…

As we draw closer to the end of the year, I challenge you to free yourself from the excess of your life. Take a long hard look at what you use and REALLY need, and think about down sizing the rest. It will take time and patience and a strong dose of courage. In the end you will feel better and the clutter that is consuming your world will slowly go away. There are people who could be blessed by the “stuff” that fills your world to overflowing. Take time today to go through one of your drawers and start the process of cleaning things up. Give it away to someone who needs it, and begin the freedom that down sizing brings!
