Inspiration 162: Freshly Cut Grass

Can you smell the fragrant odor of fresh cut grass? Do you remember what that smell means? Summer, fun, fireflies and frolicking in the grass with no concept of time, deadlines or mortgage payments. The smell of fresh cut grass to me means childhood and summer.

As I walked across my neighbor’s lawn after it was freshly mowed, I thought of all those lazy summer afternoons when I would eat banana popsicles and licked the dripy remnants from my fingers. The firelies I caught in jars and the hot dogs we cooked over open flames. The ease and peace of lazy June days filled my soul…all from a smell.

So today I ask you to celebrate childhood and summer. Spend a few moments remembering your childhood friends who splashed with you in the puddles or pool, and told wild tales of adventure and craziness hoping you would come along for the ride.  Turn off the television and use your imagination. Think back to the time when an hour seemed like a day, and a day seemed like a week…and summer vacation meant just that….vacation. It wasn’t scheduled or planned, it just happened…and you loved it. Go find a freshly cut lawn and take a deep breath…breathe in the joy that is summer!
