5 Days: Barter is Better

As part of running the gallery and working in shows, people like to learn about the artist who created the art. This means an artist’s bio, which needs to include a picture. And most people want to see the artist in their studio creating, developing, demonstrating their skill. I don’t really have any pictures of myself or of any of us like that – so we needed one. We needed a photographer. Knowing photography as we do, we didn’t want to go anywhere and have shots taken – someone needed to come to us. I know a professional photographer, and I also knew I could not afford him. I love his work, respect his pricing, and knew better than to ask for a discount…so I bartered! He and his wife attended the opening of our gallery last year, and loved my work. When I thought about who I would want to take headshots and studio shots, I thought of Kevan and Rebekah Wallace. I asked them if they would barter shots of our team, four people, plus group shots and individual headshots for one of my large pieces. They agreed and away we went.

It was a rainy, cold day here. Mother Nature has been tempting us for weeks with sun and flowers, and today reminded us that we are still in the midst of winter. Not the best day for headshots and outside posing, but Kevan Wallace did a magnificent job working with all of us. He arrived early in the morning and spent time surveying the spaces and areas of our gallery and studios. He was here for about three hours and took great care to make sure what he shot reflected us, our space and our creativity. It was Awesome! Obviously I don’t have any of the pictures to show, but we did take pictures of him taking pictures. and be sure to notice who made her way into almost every area where pictures were being taken…that darned cat!

I have included the link to Kevan and Rebekah’s website so you too can enjoy their outstanding work. Kevan is leaving his ‘day job’ to pursue photography full-time. He’s making that leap from the high dive into the adventure of a lifetime. How excited we were to be able to utilize his skills and support them both as they embark on this new journey. As we receive the finished photos, be sure to check back…no doubt they will be posted on our site and utilized in all our marketing materials.

FYI – not everyone is open to bartering. Many people don’t see it as a valid form of payment. I did not know if Kevan and Rebekah would be open to it, so I took a chance and asked. Glad I did. Sometimes as a business person you have to get uncomfortable and ask the questions…you won’t know your options until you ask.
